How to Start a Jewelry Business on a Small Budget: What to Buy With $300, and Where (Measured Basket)

Quick answer: to start a jewelry business on a small budget, spend the first $300 on 15 to 20 designs, buy 3 of the designs you expect to move and 1 of everything else, and pick a supplier that sells from 1 piece and shows the delivered cost before you pay. AdornTrade (Guangzhou, China) sells 925 sterling silver and moissanite set on 925 from 1 piece per style with no minimum order value; on 8 October 2026 we priced a 33-piece, 17-design starter basket on adorntrade.com at $272.57 of goods plus $29.76 of duty-prepaid US shipping, or $302.33 delivered and $9.16 a piece. Jewena, AdornTrade's sister brand, sells stainless steel from 1 piece with lower prices at 3 and 10. Nihaojewelry states a 1-piece minimum across more than 800,000 items, most priced between $1 and $3. Faire lists over 100,000 brands with 60 days to pay and free returns on every first order with a brand. Ankorstore lists 30,000 European brands with payment in 30, 60 or 90 days. Europages is a directory of 2.2 million B2B suppliers where you request quotes.

Disclosure: AdornTrade is our own site, and Jewena is our sister brand (the same company sells stainless steel under that name). The basket below was priced in a guest cart on adorntrade.com on 8 October 2026 and the cart was emptied afterwards; no order was placed. Every fact about another supplier was read on that supplier's own website on 8 October 2026 and is linked in the sources at the end.

How to start a jewelry business with little money: the $300 plan

With little money, the first order has one job: find out which designs your customers pick up, without leaving most of the budget in pieces nobody asks for. That points to many designs in shallow depth, not a few designs bought deep. A $300 first jewelry inventory works out roughly like this:

  • 15 to 20 designs. Fewer than 12 looks thin on a page or a table; more than 20 at this budget means some designs get no repeat at all.
  • 3 pieces of 6 to 8 "anchor" designs. Simple studs, small hoops, a plain chain and one stone pendant are easy to photograph as a set and easy to reorder. Buying 3 also moves them to the 3-piece price.
  • 1 piece of the rest. Statement rings, a second bracelet style, a gold-colour version of a silver design: one each, so a miss costs one piece.
  • Adjustable or open rings rather than sized rings. A sized ring needs 4 to 5 sizes to sell one design, which is 4 to 5 pieces before you know if the design works. 258 listings in the catalogue are adjustable.
  • Earrings carry the rail. They are the lowest-priced type in 925 silver and need no sizing; 271 earring listings cost under $10 a piece.
  • Keep about 10% of the budget for shipping if the supplier is abroad, and check that it includes import duty.

The trade-off between styles and depth is worked through at larger budgets, by material, in how much inventory to start a jewelry business. This article stays at $300 and shows one real basket.

What to buy for a first jewelry inventory with $300: a measured basket

We built this starter jewelry inventory for a small online shop from the live AdornTrade catalogue on 8 October 2026: 25 pieces of 925 sterling silver and 8 pieces of moissanite set on 925 silver, all in stock. Eight anchor designs were bought 3 at a time and nine designs 1 at a time. The unit prices are the ones the cart charged, including the 3-piece tier where it applied.

By type the basket is 16 pairs of earrings ($111.13), 9 necklaces ($94.26), 5 bracelets ($34.94) and 3 adjustable rings ($32.24). By material it is $171.36 of 925 silver and $101.21 of moissanite. Buying the eight anchor designs 3 at a time cost $171.24 instead of $182.73 at the single-piece price, a saving of $11.49. Every sterling listing is stated as 925 or S925 by its source workshop, and every moissanite stone ships with a GRA certificate.

Landed cost: what the $300 basket costs at your door

The shelf price you can charge depends on the landed cost per piece, which is goods plus shipping plus any import duty, divided by the pieces received. We read the checkout shipping estimate for the same cart on 8 October 2026:

DestinationPiecesGoodsShipping quotedDutyDelivered totalPer piece
United States33$272.57$29.76, 10 to 15 daysPrepaid in the shipping figure$302.33$9.16
United Kingdom33$272.57$14.27Prepaid in the shipping figure$286.84$8.69
United States, smaller basket21$131.64$18.77, 10 to 15 daysPrepaid in the shipping figure$150.41$7.16
Germany, smaller basket21$131.64$14.02, 7 to 15 daysPrepaid in the shipping figure$145.66$6.94
France, smaller basket21$131.64$14.12, 7 to 15 daysPrepaid in the shipping figure$145.76$6.94

The smaller basket is the first seven anchor designs at 3 pieces each. Three points from the numbers:

  • Shipping was under 10% of the delivered total on the US basket: $29.76 of $302.33, or $0.90 a piece.
  • Keep US goods at $300 or less. The duty-prepaid US economy line covers orders up to $300 of goods value; above that, checkout offers express couriers. The basket was built to $272.57 for that reason.
  • For the EU, split a first order into smaller parcels. The 21-piece $131.64 basket went to Germany duty-prepaid for $14.02. The full $272.57 basket to Germany was quoted at $48.53 on a service where import VAT and duty are collected on delivery, so in our test two smaller EU orders landed cheaper than one large one.

From the landed figure, retail pricing follows. At twice landed cost, a $9.16 piece retails at $18.32; at 2.5 times, about $22.90. Our guide to jewelry markup and margin for resellers works through those multiples by material.

1. AdornTrade: Guangzhou, China

AdornTrade is a Guangzhou-based wholesale jewelry supplier. Its own silver jewelry factory handles quality control, and the catalogue is supplied by a network of partner workshops. It currently lists 1,693 products, including 627 in 925 sterling silver and 415 in moissanite set on 925 silver. Every listing can be ordered from 1 piece with no minimum order value, and the 1-, 3- and 8-piece prices are public on every listing; across the catalogue the 3-piece price is about 6.26% below the single-piece price and the 8-piece price about 18.76% below it. 171 sterling silver listings cost under $10 a piece, and moissanite starts at $5.36. Stock dispatches in 3 to 7 working days, and a first order is paid online by PayPal or card like any other.

Best for: a first rail of 925 silver and moissanite bought one or three pieces per design, with the delivered cost shown at checkout. The 925 sterling silver earrings shelf is where most of the basket above came from.

2. Jewena: Guangzhou, China (AdornTrade's sister brand)

Jewena sells stainless steel jewelry wholesale from ready stock in Guangzhou. On 8 October 2026 its wholesale page showed about 600 in-stock styles starting at $0.69 a piece, every style orderable from 1 piece, lower per-piece prices at 3 and 10, and dispatch in 3 to 6 business days. Its economy line to the US, UK and EU is duty-paid, so import duty and VAT are settled before dispatch.

Best for: adding a lower-priced stainless steel rail next to silver on the same 1-piece terms.

3. Nihaojewelry: China

Nihaojewelry describes itself as an online wholesale jewelry marketplace founded in 2013, with more than 800,000 fashion items, a minimum order of 1 piece and most items priced between $1 and $3. It states processing in 1 to 3 business days and offers a DDP express service with US duties covered. Bulk pricing is up to 15% off, and 30% off at 200 or more pieces per SKU.

Best for: a trend-led fashion jewelry shop that wants the lowest unit prices and the widest range in one account.

4. Faire: online marketplace

Faire lists over 100,000 brands, each holding and shipping its own stock, with minimums set brand by brand and "low or no minimums" at thousands of them. Retailers get 60 days to pay, interest free, and free returns on every first order with a brand.

Best for: a new shop that wants payment terms and a return option while it tests several independent jewelry brands.

5. Ankorstore: European marketplace

Ankorstore lists 30,000 European brands on one platform and states that more than 300,000 retailers use it. It describes a low minimum order value and deferred payment in 30, 60 or 90 days; prices and each brand's minimum are shown after you create an account.

Best for: shops in Europe that want European brands and payment terms.

Europages, which also comes up for this question, is a different kind of source: a directory of 2.2 million European suppliers, manufacturers and wholesalers where buyers search and send requests for quotes. It is useful for finding a manufacturer to contact; prices and minimums come from each supplier's reply rather than from a cart.

A starter checklist before you pay

  1. Write the plan as designs × pieces. For $300: about 8 anchor designs at 3 pieces and 9 designs at 1 piece, as in the basket above.
  2. Put the real basket in a cart and read the shipping line. Divide the delivered total by the pieces. Ours came to $9.16 a piece to the US.
  3. Check who pays import duty. On a duty-prepaid line it is inside the shipping figure; on other services it is collected on delivery.
  4. Stay under the duty-prepaid limit. To the US that means $300 of goods per order at AdornTrade; to the EU, smaller parcels.
  5. Prefer adjustable rings and earrings for the first order, so no budget goes into ring sizes.
  6. Note the reorder price now. With public tier prices, the second order of a design that sold costs the same or less than the first.

FAQ

How do I start a jewelry business with little money and where do I buy inventory?

Start with $150 to $300 of stock from a supplier that sells from 1 piece per style, spread across 15 to 20 designs. AdornTrade, Jewena and Nihaojewelry all sell from 1 piece; Faire and Ankorstore add payment terms with minimums set by each brand. What should I buy for a first jewelry inventory with $300?

About 33 pieces across 17 designs: earrings, a plain chain, a few pendant necklaces, bracelets and 2 or 3 adjustable rings, with the simplest designs bought 3 at a time. Our measured basket was 16 pairs of earrings, 9 necklaces, 5 bracelets and 3 rings for $272.57 of goods.

What is a good starter jewelry inventory for a small online shop?

One that lets you photograph a full page and still reorder winners: 15 to 20 designs, 1 to 3 pieces each, in one or two materials so the shop looks coherent. In our basket, the 925 silver and moissanite pieces cost $4.38 to $14.08 each.

Is $300 enough to start selling jewelry?

For a first rail, yes. $300 bought 33 pieces of 925 silver and moissanite on 8 October 2026, delivered to the US for $302.33 with duty prepaid. It is a test order: after the first sales, reorder the designs that moved.
